Research Analyst, Video Games

IHS Screen Digest requires a Shanghai-based Research Analyst to work with its London-based analyst team. The successful candidate will work as part of the Games analyst team.

This is a unique opportunity to join the world’s leading research group in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) space. The successful candidate will be expected to develop knowledge and expertise in the relevant sectors and ultimately to deal with client enquiries related to the geographies they cover. These enquiries must be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Once a suitable level of knowledge is developed, analysts will begin to contribute written analysis of developments in their markets which will range from news-driven commentary to more in-depth statistical analysis of market trends.

Role Description:

The successful candidate will need to perform the following tasks:

  • Represent the IHS Screen Digest games team in Asia, connecting with local games operators, developers and publishers, dealing with local journalist enquiries and reporting back to the team of games analysts based in London, UK. Due to the different time zones this will mean starting later and working later at least once a week to liaise with UK-based analysts.     
  • Research and conduct collaborative data and trend analysis alongside the UK team on games markets in territories across Asia including China, South Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam.
  • Help build market sizing databases and market models for forecasts in collaboration with the games team based in the UK. This requires a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Produce quarterly and annual market reports and presentations on the Asian games sector using company templates. This requires a good working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
  • Suggest and write commentaries on market and industry events related to the Asian games sector.
  • Provide Asian games research input into the monthly IHS Screen Digest newsletter. 
     

The games research analyst will initially examine the following markets:

  • Massively multiplayer online games
  • Multiplayer online games
  • Other online games (including casual browser, skills games etc)

 Education and experience requirements

Candidates must have degree-level education; business, economics, science or engineering is preferred. Post-graduate or other research experience is an advantage. Previous analyst experience is not required, but relevant industry experience could be an advantage. Knowledge of the games sector in Asia would be of great benefit, including an understanding of how the games industry functions, how content is distributed, what type of games markets operate in the region and which business models are used.

The position requires fluent English to liaise with English speakers in Asia and the UK-based team. Written English must be of a suitable standard to write commentaries, emails, presentations and reports without significant editing. Candidate must also be fluent in Mandarin (including the Shanghai dialect). Cantonese may be a plus. A basic knowledge of other Asian languages would also be beneficial. Candidate must have excellent inter-personal skills and be confident dealing with people from different cultures.

Excellent written English is essential as are strong numerical skills and knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Attention to detail is critical and an ability and desire to extend knowledge in new areas will be required.


Research Analyst, TV & Advertising

IHS Screen Digest requires a Shanghai-based Research Analyst to work with two London-based analyst teams. The successful candidate will split their time equally between work with the Advertising team and the Television team. Due to the different time zones this will mean starting later and working later at least once a week to liaise closely with UK-based analysts.

These enquiries must be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Advertising team role

Help maintain and develop market analysis and forecasts for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for the following media categories:

  • Online (search, display, mobile)
  • Television (national channels, digital channels)
  • Outdoor and digital signage
  • Press
  • Radio

Develop relationships and regular communication with local: 

  • Advertising agencies
  • Advertising sales houses and media owners (e.g. CCTV) Advertising trade associations
  • Advertisers (brands)
  • Relevant regulatory/government authorities

There will be a mix of report writing in English and quantitative spreadsheet analysis.

TV team role:

Establishing and maintaining contacts with executives at cable and satellite television operators, IPTV companies and telecoms companies. The successful candidate must be able to persuade companies to provide data on their operations, primarily subscriber numbers for digital and analogue TV, HDTV, DVR uptake, telephony and broadband subscription. In addition, information should be gathered on TV channels including details of all HD channels available, packaging and pricing of channel subscription offers and pricing of broadband Internet and telephony services. Full details of all channel offers will also need to be collecte.

Collected information will be input using Microsoft Excel. Further data manipulation will also be required to calculate and model revenues and other key metrics.

The analyst will need to gather data from a number of countries, mainly in the Asia Pacific and likely to include: China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Hong Kong.

Education and experience requirements

Sales Manager, iSuppli Shanghai

Responsibilities. You will be responsible for managing and implementing sales activities in China.

  • Carry out fundamental sales activities for Market Intelligence services
  •  Implement direct sales to clients in China and make follow-ups
  • Support the sales aspects of iSuppli analyst’s activities
  • Sales report to Raymond Han, Head of China Sales
  • Prepare sales presentation materials
  • Improve the environment to support sales to clients including iSuppli data sheet preparation
  • Build a client database necessary for sales activities
  • Coordinate foreign visitors such as schedule arrangements and making appointments
  • Prepare the material for sales forecast
  • Plan and implement sales strategies and sales goals with Raymond Han
  •  Act as the contact for consulting business when necessary

Perform other duties and functions as may be required.


 

Photovoltaics – Analyst

 Analyst – China PV Industry and PV Installations

This role entails taking over as the lead analyst for iSuppli’s China PV Industry and Installations Analysis. This area is part of iSuppli’s uniquely positioned value chain research, which the Photovoltaics industry is rapidly adopting as “must-have” guidance and forecast tool.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • ---The creation and maintenance of databases and accompanying analysis which track Photovoltaics production, capacity expansions and financial data of the major OEM’s,
  • ---Understanding of Customer-Buyer relationships in the Chinese PV Industry
  • ---Updates on policy support for Photovoltaics, system installations and PV downstream activities including inverter, Balance of System cost, system prices and installation companies (EPC)
  • ---Coordination and execution of primary (surveys and interviews) and secondary research to gather information
  • ---Proactive management of the client community and feedback process
  • ---Support of the sales process, marketing and press relationships
     

The preferred candidate needs to have good knowledge of the Photovoltaics industry in China, be knowledgeable of the major OEMs/Brands and their product offerings. A Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with an MBA is preferred but work experience can be a substitute. The applicant should have been working in the solar industry (ideally procurement or marketing) carry strong skills in MS Office Suite with emphasis on MS Excel. Fluent Speaking and Writing in English is requested.
